Sarah Davies (Davies) Gibbons

Saturday morning, May 15, 2010, Sarah Davies Gibbons peacefully left the struggles of this life to receive her eternal reward. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Paul Eugene Gibbons; sons and daughters: Paul Eugene Gibbons, Jr. of Toronto, Canada; Sarah Jane Gibbons of Mansfield, Ohio; James David Gibbons of Greenville, South Carolina; John Mark Gibbons of Brooklyn, New York; Judith Gibbons Chan of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; grandchildren: Mark Gibbons, Elizabeth Gibbons-Camp and Michael Gibbons-Camp; a great granddaughter Abigail Gibbons-Camp; sons-and-daughters-in-law: Glenna Steil Gibbons, Anne Peck Gibbons, and Anthony Chan; and Stephen Goldfinger, who cared for her as a son for his mother. Born in 1928 to James and Mary Davies, in Martins Ferry, Ohio, Mrs. Gibbons is remembered as wife and mother, as a Christian sister to many, leader and teacher of young people, and as a nurse. She graduated from the Martins Ferry Hospital School of Nursing in 1949, and received her BSN from Ohio University in 1982. And she was an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). Throughout a nursing career of more than three decades, she focused on caring for infants, especially premature and low-birth-weight children, caring for thousands of babies at Martins Ferry Hospital and Bethesda Medical Center in Zanesville, Ohio. Accepting salvation by grace at an early age, Sarah participated in youth and adult activities in the American Baptist Church at the local, state, and national levels for most of her life. She was a member of Martins Ferry's First Baptist Church from childhood until 1966, when her family joined Market Street Baptist Church in Zanesville. As her children were growing, Sarah served as a Cub Scout den mother, Brownie and Girl Scout troop leader, and 4-H advisor. Along with her husband, she served as a Sunday School teacher and Youth Group advisor at Market Street Baptist Church and in the Zanesville Association of the Ohio Baptist Convention. She was also an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Ohio Historical Society. Mrs. Gibbons was 81 years old at the time of her passing. Friends may call at Bolin-Dierkes Funeral Home,1271 Blue Avenue, Zanesville, Ohio on Tuesday, May 18, 2010 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 19 at Market Street Baptist Church,140 North 6th Street, Zanesville with visitation from 9-10 a.m. Burial will follow at Zanesville Memorial Park.
