Stanley Olbrys, 89, of Zanesville, died peacefully at 10:25 a.m. at 3125 East Pike. Born June 1, 1921, in Ambridge, PA., to the late Peter and Stella Zieza Olbrys, the youngest of ten children, he was a meat cutter by trade being employed at David Davies Kroger in Columbus and retiring from Carl Rittberger Sr. Meats in 1989. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater receiving the good conduct medal. He was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ having served on the consistory and grounds committee and a lifetime member of the DAV, American Legion and the VFW. He enjoyed chefing at his backyard family cookouts, was an avid gardener sharing many of his greenhouse plants and homegrown vegetables, made tasty homemade wines gifting family and friends alike, loved caring for his and the numerous neighborhood cats, and going fishing and being with his camping buddies. He is survived by his wife, Jean O'Neil Olbrys, whom he married December 16, 1947; his daughter, Patricia (William) Longshore; sister-in-law, Patricia J. Blair; nieces, Susan (Robert) Davis and Judith (Steven) Hartmeyer; nephew, John (Cathy) Blair; great niece, Alice (Rick) Laippley; other extended family members and last but not least, his many beloved friends and caregivers at the Muskingum County Home. He was preceded in death in addition to his parents, by his brothers, Cashimir, Walter, William and John Olbrys; his sisters, Mary Brown, Rose Long, Connie Danko, Nellie Rajter and Veronica Mahnick; other extended family and his many beloved pets. Visitation will be 2 hours prior to the service at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, October 21, 2010 at the Bolin-Dierkes Funeral Home, 1271 Blue Ave., Zanesville with the Rev. Mitch Reed officiating. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery with VFW George Selsam Post #1058 holding full military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Muskingum County Home Resident Activities Fund, Hospice of SE Ohio, Immanuel United Church of Christ or the Muskingum County Animal Shelter.
