Taylor L. Powell, 94, of Zanesville, died at 9:10 A.M. on Monday, December 19, 2016, at The Oaks at Northpointe, Zanesville. He was born August 22, 1922, son of Thomas L. and Virginia Taylor Powell. He was married to Florence Bernice Powell, whom he married July 23, 1943, for 72 years and who died April 20, 2015. Taylor was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, serving on the Board of Directors, Vice President and Treasurer. He was a member of the Zanesville Country Club and former member of the Zanesville Jaycees. Taylor started out in 1945, opening a Texico filling station on the corner of Harrison Street and Putnam Avenue with his brother-in-law Robert Phillips. He later opened a grocery store behind in a small room. He later purchased his brother in laws half and continued to enlarge the store, Powells Market, retiring after thirty five years. Taylor later received his Real Estate License which he held for a time. Taylor served in the Merchant Marines during WWII in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Mediterranean Theaters and his ship was involved in the invasion of France. His ship was then converted to a troop and equipment carrier. Taylor put on many entertainment shows with his pal JoJo. He is survived by a daughter, Sheri Lynn (Dick) Smith, of Zanesville; two sons, Taylor Lynn Powell II and Steven R. Powell, both of Zanesville; twelve grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Sylvia (Doug) Dawson of McConnelsville; In addition to his parents and wife, he is preceded in death by his beloved step-mother, Thelma Wisehart Powell; a daughter, Carolyn Sue Powell; two sisters, Betty Phillips and Zona Belle Huber; and three brothers, Stratton Powell, Charles Powell, and Robert Draper. Friends and family may call from 6:00 8:00 P.M. on Thursday, December 22, 2016 and one hour prior to the funeral service at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, December 23, 2016 at the BOLIN-DIERKES FUNERAL HOME, 1271 BLUE AVENUE, ZANESVILLE with Mr. William L. Meaige officiating. Entombment will follow at Zanesville Memorial Park, Zanesville where full Military honors will be accorded to him by the United States Coast Guard in conjunction with the VFW George Selsam Post 1058 and the American Legion Post 29.
