ZANESVILLE - Warren Frederick "Fred" Fluharty, 80, formerly of Lawhead Lane and Wheeling Avenue, passed away surrounded by his family, at 8:30 a.m. Friday, August 12, 2005, at Cedar Hill Care Center. He was born September 1, 1924 to Warren and Mary Beulah (Fisher) Fluharty of Zanesville and a graduate of Philo High School. He was a retired Roekel Company truck driver and a former Assistant Street Commissioner for the City of Zanesville as well as a lifetime member of the DAV. A WWII Army Veteran, having served from March 1943 thru Nov 1945 in Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 164th Infantry, he was a member of the famous Americal Division. Battles included that of the Northern Solomons and the Liberation of the Southern Philippines in the South Pacific. In recognition of his service, he received the Combat Infantry Badge, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with 2 Bronze Stars, Philippines Liberation Ribbon with 1 Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Purple Heart Medal, and still awaits the Bronze Star Medal. In addition to his wife of almost 55 years, Eloise Gwendolyn Whyde whom he married on Sept 15, 1950, are five children Debra (Rolley) Angles and Nancy Dennis of Zanesville; three sons, Fred, Jr. (Cordia) of Wooster, David M. (Debbie) of Elkhorn City, KY, and Charles E. (Carla) of Philo, and a brother Frank H. (Carolyn) Fluharty of Zanesville, 10 grandchildren including two serving in the Armed Forces in Japan and Iraq, 7 great-grandchildren, and several very special nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, a brother Raymond Fluharty and sister Rea Davis preceded him. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 15, 2005 at the Bolin-Dierkes Funeral Home located at 1271 Blue Avenue, Zanesville, Ohio 43701 with Rev Terry Rowland officiating. Burial will follow at the Frazeysburg Cemetery. Friends may call 12:00-2:00 p.m. Monday, August 15, 2005.
