William Nelson Mccoy

April 11, 1924 — September 24, 2016

William Nelson McCoy (Nelson) passed away peacefully in Zanesville on Saturday, September 24 at the age of 92. Nelson is survived by his sister, Ruth Gleeton (Cheshire, Connecticut), his daughter, Margaret Smith (Wilmington, North Carolina), grandchildren, Perry Smith (Atlanta, Georgia), Lindsay Grider (Dallas, Texas), Derek Smith (Dallas, Texas), and his five wonderful great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his dear family friends and adopted daughters Ann Holl (Columbus, Ohio) and Martha Keysaer (Columbus, Ohio). Nelson was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Ann Mock, by his beloved wife of 70 years, Billie McCoy, and his son William Nelson McCoy III (Mac). Nelson was born in 1924 in Zanesville to William Nelson McCoy and Ruth Bolin McCoy. He served in the Air Force as a pilot and later graduated from the University of Michigan. He married Billie Ritter McCoy of Amarillo Texas in 1945. They soon returned to Zanesville where he raised his family, enjoyed his many friends, played golf, and began his lifelong commitment to The Nelson McCoy Pottery. Nelson was a kind man who was dedicated to his family. He continued his family tradition of working to make a difference in Zanesville. He served actively in many civic capacities including leadership roles with The Zanesville Canal and Manufacturing Company, The Associated Pottery and Glass Manufacturers, Citizens National Bank of Zanesville, Zanesville Board of Education, Zanesville Country Club, Bethesda Hospital, The Rotary Club, and The Muskingum County Veterans Association. His longstanding membership at Grace United Methodist Church was of great importance to him, as he continued his family legacy to Grace. He loved his pottery friends including above all the dedicated collectors from all over America, who keep McCoy Pottery alive and growing. Always a gentleman and a leader, Nelson will be deeply missed by his family and friends. He made a difference. He and Billie are now together in peace. The family is grateful for the kind wishes received from the Zanesville community and for the support many have provided to both Billie and Nelson in their final years. They especially thank Nancy Jozwiak for her kindness and dedication.
