William A. Painter

William Arley "Bill" Painter Jr., 88, of Lewis Center, Ohio, passed away peacefully in his home, on October 1, 2012. Bill was born in Columbus, Ohio, to Ida and William Painter on March 20, 1924. He married Barbara Arlene Lane on August 9, 1942, in Zanesville, Ohio. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the 3RD Army, 92ND Battalion, "A" Company as a combat corpsman from October 1942 to August 1945. He saw action during the D-Day invasions, in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, St. Lo, Thiensville, Luxembourg, Bastogne, Dachau and Belgium. He started working for Mr. Talley and Mr. Zulandt in their tailoring shop as a teenager and eventually purchased their business, building a fine men's clothing establishment, Talley and Zulandt, Inc., in Zanesville. He was involved in Masons, Rotary Club, Zanesville High School Booster Club and Euclid United Methodist Church. Bill is preceded in death by his parents, Ida and William, his wife of 65 years, Barbara, and his sister, Anne. Bill is survived by his daughter, Mollie (David) Harrigan of Florida; his son, Michael Painter of Powell, Ohio; and his son, Matthew Painter, of Lewis Center, Ohio. He has 5 grandchildren: Alexa Painter (Michael) Jackson, Matthew (Brandi) Painter, Kathryn Harrigan (Brandon) Christian, Jennifer Harrigan (Nathan) Lee and Michael Harrigan, as well as 7 great-grandchildren: Jackson and Griffin Painter, Lucas and Owen Jackson, Jack Christian, and Lydia and Evelyn Lee. Bill was an involved father, an astute business man and an avid sports fan, especially of his children and grandchildren! Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday October 5, 2012 at Bolin-Dierkes Funeral Home, 1271 Blue Avenue, Zanesville, Ohio. Friends and family may call one hour prior to the funeral service. Full military honors will be conducted at 10:30 A.M. at the funeral home by the United States Army in conjunction with the VFW George Selsam Post 1058. He will be laid to rest at Zanesville Memorial Park Cemetery next to his beloved wife Barbara at a later date. Memorials may be given to the Zanesville Tip-Off Club: Zanesville High School, Attn: Tip-Off Club, 1701 Blue Avenue, Zanesville, Ohio 43701.
